Pardon Our Dust

We are in the process of doing some maintenance. Our AF Radio will be back up shortly. And our AF Podcast will broadcasting once again.

Music and Lifestyle

According to a recent study in the Psychology of Music journal the music you listen to has a link to the type of lifestyle you lead. Below are some of the stats they came up with by surveying 2500 people living in the U.K.

39% of rap fans had more than one sexual partner in the last 5 years.

Only 1.5% of country music fans did the same.

12% of opera music fans had tried magic mushrooms.

The study went on to say that:

56.9% of dance music fans and 53.1% of rap music fans confessed to taking part in criminal activity.

Only 17.9% of fans of musicals did the same.

This study was conducted by Dr. Adrain North from the University of Leicester. The next move is to extend the research worldwide, and you can help by answering a few questions at www.musicaltastetest.com.

Multi Tasking and Music

There is no secret to the benefits of music, but a recent study done by UCLA suggest that listening to music while studying can impact ones ability to retain that information. The study focuses on the concept of multi-tasking in general but uses music as one example of multi-tasking. The study talks about what part of the brain is used when performing certain task. And depending on what the tasks is and the part of the is brain being used, your ability to learn is affected if there are other distractions such as music.

So, I guess if your are learning Mandarin turn that music way down or off, but if you are learning to play online poker its not so bad.

Music and Sports

Music definitely plays a role on our psyche. And there is no question that when listening to music while working out or training we are able to push out that extra rep or run that extra mile, but that’s during training. What about game time?

Well, Professor Peter Terry, a sports psychologist at the University of Southern Queensland, believes that one day music could be that one thing that could give an athlete that winning edge. With technology advancements in mp3 players and shoes combined with the ability to download music this idea is not so far off.

So, I guess next will be hearing about those professional athletes who have been accused of using performance enhancement music.
